The Foundation School in Largo Celebrates National Poetry Month

In recognition of National Poetry Month, The Foundation School Media Center held its first Poetry Slam. The absolutely slammin’ event was held on Wednesday, April 30, 2008 and included talented students from many of the middle school classes as well as some from the high school. The Media Center was transformed into a “Bohemian Village” spot in New York City as students and staff bards spun their words like true “wordsmiths.” Everyone in the audience snapped their fingers and soft jazz music played in the background. In addition to original works from students, poems written by Langston Hughes and Claude McKay were recited. There was also a dedication to Aime Cesaire, the Martinique poet who recently passed away at the age of 94. The Slam was so well received that there is talk about hosting another one before the end of the school year.
